Question from Knitgen, “Dear Leslie and Laura,

How do you know/imagine/predict what a braid or batt of fiber will spin up looking as a finished product? Is there a way to have an idea of how it will look using different spinning techniques, 2-ply, 3-ply, fractal spun and so on. I’m tempted by all these beautiful braids and so far my spinning has turned out beautiful but I want to be able to better plan the color/look of my finished yarn. Right now, it feels like a surprise.

If sampling is the answer to my first question. How do you do that? Start with an ounce and try all the different versions? But what if you only have 4 ounces?

I just finished spinning a braid that I spit in half lengthwise, hated spinning the first half, enjoyed the second half and love the final product. The first half was not attractive and I hated it. It took me months to finish this project because of that. I just plied it this morning and was loving the result.

I was thinking of adding a second braid to improve the boring first half, but in the end decided not to. How do you know when to add a second color/braid to the mix. Adding a second color, how do you decide between a solid or a second complimentary variegated.”
